Uni plans encounter strong resistance

PLANS for Kent University to expand into the Chaucer Field area have been hit with another blow, as Canterbury City Council has extended the objection deadline until May 9.

The Facebook group that has been set up as a petition to the university's proposed developments has already generated strong support to stop the extension, and the council has received over 400 objections to date.

The university had planned to build a hotel and add extra student accommodation but after historical documents were unearthed refuting the development of the Chaucer Fields, the development has stalled.
The Facebook group has stirred up anger and disgust among the locals and Jill Wiles wrote: “I used to first walk and then cycle over Chaucer Fields whilst recovering from cancer - it kept me alive, so I don't want to lose it. Do we have to build on everything?”
However, Kent University student Edward Johnstone responded to the group by writing: “There’s always going to be expansion and stopping that just because of fond memories seems stupid.
“The University of Kent has been running for 45 years or so. I would expect that when buying a house near the university you would have to allow for student noise and its future expansion when making your decision.”
